Computer Assisted Instruction Policy

At John Tyson Elementary, our school has been equipped with a 30 workstation computer lab and 4 computers in every classroom.  The students use quite an assortment of learning program through out  the year.   Although "skill-and-drill" software is useful in the school setting, we are working to increase student computer literacy through keyboarding skills and basic computer applications.  The children often use Microsoft Office for spelling practice, journal writing, letter writing skills and reports in MSWord.

The fifth grade social studies classes culminate their Arkansas History unit by creating group presentations through Microsoft PowerPoint.  STAR reading assessment and Accelerated Reader are currently used by children in second through fifth grades to evaluate and track students' reading ability and comprehension as well as cultivate a love for reading.  Fifth grade students use the "Type to Learn" typing  program as a training tool to learn how to type and sharpen their keyboard skills.

Access to the Internet is used appropriately to coincide with units of study in the classroom.  We ensure safe student use of the World Wide Web as only specific sites that have been previewed by the teacher are used and "web surfing" is not permitted.
